Lumwana is the clearest proof that a Zambian mine site will commission a large packaged water plant on a short clock. It is not a reverse osmosis train, but it is exactly the buyer behaviour an RO supplier should plan for: modular, fast-tracked, no tolerance for a late delivery.

That mine is now doubling down. Barrick’s USD 2 billion Super Pit expansion is under construction, lifting throughput from 27 to 52 million tonnes of ore a year toward a company target of around 240,000 tonnes of copper a year by roughly 2028, and every added tonne of ore needs added process water behind it.

Moxico Resources’ Mimbula project, near Chingola, was targeting 56,000 tonnes of copper cathode a year in early 2026 through an SX-EW circuit that cannot tolerate the swings a raw river or borehole intake delivers untreated. Kansanshi and Sentinel carry the same makeup-water requirement at a larger, established scale.

On the pharma side, Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals broke ground on a 40 acre facility inside Lusaka South MFEZ that will produce tablets, capsules, liquids, injectables, topicals, and beta-lactam products. An injectables line cannot run without a validated water-for-injection system, and that system starts with an RO or RO-plus-EDI train, not with distillation alone.

What is inside a Zambian RO skid, and who supplies it

A mining or pharma RO train here is a brackish-water, low-pressure system, nothing like the seawater kit built for a coastal plant. The core components stay the same family: spiral-wound membranes, fibreglass pressure vessels, multimedia or ultrafiltration pretreatment, a feed pump sized for well under half the pressure a seawater train needs, and instrumentation for conductivity, pressure, and flow.

Membrane brands come off the same shortlist used across southern Africa. What moves the number is consistent everywhere: feed water TDS and fouling potential, permeate flow rate, whether the buyer needs a full pharma validation package or a discharge-standard mining train, and whether the unit ships containerised or stick-built for site assembly.

A containerised unit costs more per litre of capacity but compresses the civil scope to a slab, power, and pipework, which matters where installation labour, not capital, is the scarce resource.

How RO skid deals get paid

The kwacha floats and has moved in the buyer’s favour: from an all-time weak point near 29 to the dollar in March 2025 to roughly 19 by August 2026, making imported equipment materially cheaper in kwacha terms, though the currency’s history argues against quoting in it. Letters of credit clear through Zanaco, Stanbic Zambia, Absa Zambia, and FNB Zambia, with foreign-issued LCs commonly confirmed offshore. Mining buyers settle fastest, since copper revenue is dollar-denominated at source.

Zone location changes the landed cost directly. Getting the skid to a Zambian site

Zambia is landlocked, and a containerised RO skid with pressure vessels and a control panel already mounted travels as one awkward, high-value box rather than loose freight. Most cargo into the Copperbelt and Lusaka South routes through the port of Dar es Salaam, then inland by road or the TAZARA railway, whose revitalisation under a 30-year CCECC concession remains in its early operating phase, not yet a dependable substitute for road on a tight commissioning date.

Durban and the North-South Corridor are the established southern alternative, and Beira serves buyers closer to the eastern Copperbelt. The Lobito Corridor’s Zambian rail leg is still pre-construction, so anything routed that way today still finishes by road feeder.

Where the RFQs actually surface

Most of the demand mapped above never touches a public tender. Barrick, First Quantum, and Moxico run water treatment procurement through their own engineering and supply chain offices, the route their process and dewatering orders already follow. Akums will procure its water system through its own project team and EPC contractor as the build progresses.

The public slice that exists runs through ZPPA’s e-GP portal, mandatory under ZPPA Circular No. 37 of 2025, useful for utility-side or institutional water work, but not where the mine or pharma orders above will appear.

The old channels are thinning here too

The trade fair calendar for this equipment is mining-first, not general industrial. ZIMEC, the Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference, ran its 13th edition in Kitwe in March 2026 under presidential patronage, and Kitwe’s CAMINEX show draws the same supplier base to the Copperbelt. Both put a vendor in front of the right engineers once a year at best.
