Capacity is the anchor. The most recent benchmark install in the country is instructive: Mombasa Cement’s third Pfeiffer mill at Vipingo is an MVR 3750 C-4 rated at 150t/h of OPC with a 2,900kW drive, per Cement Lime Gypsum. The practical consequence for buyers: if you want to choose your own mill, buy the grinding station as an owner-led package rather than folding it into a turnkey scope. Before anything is signed, send clinker, gypsum, and additive samples to the vendors’ grinding test centres. Payment on a Kenyan mill contract is lower-friction than almost anywhere in the region, so use the financing round to compare vendors, not just prices. Step 4: land it through Mombasa and clear it cheap

The import mechanics are predictable, and the single biggest cost lever is exemption paperwork done early. The mill table, housing sections, and gear unit move as breakbulk through Mombasa, with the balance of the plant containerised. Most industrial production machinery enters Kenya at zero duty under the EAC Common External Tariff, with 16% VAT that registered importers recover, plus minor declaration and railway levies. A KenInvest investment certificate, or SEZ status where the site qualifies, can remove duty and VAT on capital goods entirely, which on a full grinding station changes the landed cost materially. Commissioning follows the vendor’s standard sequence: erection supervision, cold and hot commissioning, then the performance test. A mill vendor’s traditional Kenya play was a booth at Big 5 Construct Kenya, a walk around the Nairobi International Trade Fair, and a distributor agreement in Industrial Area. The economics no longer hold.
